Staff at Sony UK Technology Centre (UK TEC) came together for a day of sporting activities recently, taking part in its annual Mini Olympics.

This year marks the fifth year that the event has been held as part of the Pencoed manufacturing giant’s wellbeing commitments.

This year saw staff teams take part in a host of activities including: Sack Race Relay, Tug of War, 4x 100m Relay, Football Dribble Relay, 100m Race, Balloon Wobble Relay, and Three-legged Race.

The day was a huge success with the ‘Most Valuable Team’ accolade going to The Apprentices, the overall winners of the day. Meanwhile, the awards for Fastest Man in Sony went to Steven Cole, and Fastest Woman in Sony went to Stephanie Woodhouse.

As an employer, Sony UK TEC places a huge emphasis on its staff’s wellbeing, believing that providing its talented and highly skilled workforce with the tools to live a balanced and healthy lifestyle can only improve its already world-class manufacturing capabilities.

Throughout the year, it allocates days where team players can come together to have fun and take part in activities that contribute to their overall health and fitness.

The company’s focus for 2019 is ‘Healthy Minds’, where Sony UK TEC have been working to eliminate the stigma behind mental health in the workplace.

It offers staff members a safe environment to seek the information and care they require in relation to mental health, injury assistance and general wellbeing through IPRS health.

The manufacturing facility also employs a Halo personal trainer to run weekly classes such as Legs, Bums and Tums, Yogalates, Running Club, and Bootcamp.

To accompany the fitness element of the wellbeing programme, a Sony UK TEC Slimmer’s Club has been established to encourage staff to adopt healthy eating habits and gain access to advice for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Gerald Kelly, Director of Professional Services, at Sony UK TEC, said: “This year’s mini Olympics was a huge success. We were so happy to see our Team Players come together and thoroughly enjoy the day, embracing all the activities and taking part in some healthy competition.

“We believe the health and wellbeing of our staff is pivotal to the success of our business. The foundations of a successful work environment come from providing staff with the tools to connect with each other and live a healthy lifestyle.

“We take the mental and physical wellbeing of our staff seriously at Sony UK TEC and we are so pleased to see the positive impact it has had on every person as an individual and as a team.”
