STUDENTS achieved their goal of supporting the community in partnership with a North Wales football club.

Youngsters on the second Traineeship Construction Academy at Coleg Cambria have been busy revamping facilities at Ruthin FC.

The 16 to 18 year-old learners are taking part in a six-week initiative – which was set up by Bodelwyddan-based Wynne Construction – to develop their basic building skills while helping the team as it looks to make improvements off the pitch to its clubhouse and grounds.

Nicola Gaughran, Operations Manager for the Academy, said the college is always looking to give back to organisations in north east Wales.

“This is the second year we have run this programme in conjunction with the North Wales Construction Framework, CiTB and local building companies,” said Nicola.

“It was a huge success last year, with 80% of learners securing positive progressions into jobs in the industry, and gives them the chance to sharpen their skills and their own personal development.”

She added: “This opportunity at Ruthin FC is preparing them for their placements with local construction companies, hopefully leading to employment.

“We have really enjoyed working alongside the club and are glad to be able to help them improve their facilities for players, coaches and the supporters.”

Wynne Construction works closely with many organisations across North Wales and is leading on some of the top building projects in the region, including the redevelopment of St Kentigern Hospice, St Asaph, and the £20m revamp of Cambria’s Yale campus in Wrexham.

Alison Hourihane, Business and Community Development Manager for the company, said:

“Working closely with Denbighshire County Council and the new school builds in Ruthin and the surrounding villages, we are always keen to support local community initiatives.

“Ruthin FC were in the process of refurbishing their clubhouse and grounds and were looking for help.

“It was great to put them in touch with Coleg Cambria and their traineeship programme as students are learning on-the-job and gaining valuable skills, and the clubhouse so far is looking great.”
