Communities wishing to hold a street party to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee on the June Bank Holiday weekend can now apply for a road closure – with the Council offering support to complete the process.
Her Majesty The Queen became the first British Monarch to celebrate 70 years of service on February 6, 2022. To celebrate this anniversary, many events and initiatives are taking place across the UK – culminating in a four-day Bank Holiday weekend from Thursday, June 2, to Sunday, June 5.
To help residents and communities come together and celebrate this historic milestone, and in the spirit of the celebrations, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council will waive its usual charges for road closures for those planning a street party. Please note that each individual street must apply for a road closure, and each party must take place on one of the days of the extended Bank Holiday weekend (June 2-5).
Road closures take time to organise, and any closure required for a street party must follow a formal application process so the Council is aware of each one – in order to inform other partner organisations, including bus companies.
Anyone wishing to hold a street party must apply to the Council before the deadline on Friday, April 15. Applications submitted after this date may not be accepted. This process can be completed on the Council’s website.
A spokesperson for Rhondda Cynon Taf Council said: “The Council has received a number of enquiries from members of the public about whether or not they can hold street parties in their communities, to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee during the extended June Bank Holiday weekend. The Council is supporting residents by waiving all of the usual charges associated with road closures, to help communities celebrate this special anniversary.
“To ensure the celebrations are carried out in the safest way possible, each street party must have a formal road closure. This will notify the Council about the events, allowing us to inform partners like the emergency services and local bus companies, to amend their routes. The application process for this is now open, and those wishing to hold a local event are urged to complete the online form as soon as possible – and before the deadline on April 15.”
