Former Cardiff Met students Jack Leach and Rory Burns have been called up to the England Cricket squad ahead of the side’s Test series against Sri Lanka.

The duo both spent time at Cardiff MCC University whilst undertaking their higher education studies, a club that is one of six University Centres of Cricketing Excellence supported by Marylebone Cricket Club and has seen a succession of its alumni go on to forge careers at the sport’s top tier.

The call up for 28-year-old Rory Burns, who serves as Surrey’s opening batsman, is his first for the Test squad and follows a stellar 2018 season in which he was also appointed as Surrey’s first-class captain.

Taunton-born Somerset spin bowler Jack Leach, 27, was previously called up to England’s Test squad for the tour of New Zealand in March of this year, making his debut in the second Test in Christchurch.

On the news that two of the club’s former players have received the call up to the national side, Cardiff MCCU head coach Mark O’Leary said:

“I’m absolutely delighted that both Jack and Rory will have the opportunity to play for their country on the upcoming tour.

“The news showcases the impact that the programme here at Cardiff MCCU is continuing to have at the very top of the game, as well as the calibre of player that we are consistently able to produce.

“Everyone at the club is looking forward to seeing the side play out in Sri Lanka and I’m certain that both players will make a positive impact when they’re called upon.”
