The former Wilko superstore on Holton Road in Barry has been given a festive makeover to kickstart a series of transformation works following the recent purchase of the site by the Vale of Glamorgan Council.
Six local artists have been commissioned to produce a number of artworks to turn the empty shop windows into delightful winter-themed displays.
The artists worked at pace to have the window displays completed in time for the Barry Christmas Lights Switch-On.
Work is also underway to replace the signage on the front and sides of the building, signaling the beginning of a new era to become a vibrant community asset.
Emma George, a multidisciplinary artist and maker, and Illustrator Matt Joyce were among the artists selected for the project.

Emma devised two unique artworks – including a miniature Porthkerry Country Park window display with an interactive bridge and toy steam train as well as a Christmas-themed Vegetable Pop Art Wall.
Matt also produced a colourful and lively winter scene made with layers of artwork on lightweight foam.
Cllr Lis Burnett, Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council, said: “Seeing the former Wilko building be brought back to life with such imaginative and vibrant artwork is a wonderful way to begin the transformation of this important town centre space.
“Holton Road is at the heart of Barry’s community, and we wanted to ensure that even while long-term plans are being developed, the building doesn’t sit dormant.
“By commissioning local artists, we’re celebrating the creativity that thrives within our own community and giving residents something joyful to enjoy during the festive season.”
