To celebrate the launch of Huw Stephens’ new weekday show on BBC Radio 6 Music, Cardiff Music Board are supporting a free gig at Clwb Ifor Bach, headlined by fast-rising psych-rockers CVC.

With their Welsh Music Prize nominated album described by the NME as “a cracking debut album of feelgood, uber-retro gems” and by The Times as “remarkably fully formed,” CVC were one of the break-through acts of 2023.

The six-piece musical collective from Church Village, just outside Cardiff, will play Clwb Ifor Bach on Thursday January 11th, alongside two other Cardiff-based artists, hotly-tipped by Huw Stephens to break through in 2024.

Tickets are free, and only available on the door, so the advice is to arrive early to avoid missing out.

Broadcasting from the BBC Cymru Wales Studios in Central Square, Cardiff,Huw Stephens’ new show will be 6 Music’s first regular programme broadcast from Wales, as part of the BBC’s Across the UK plans to better reflect, represent and serve all audiences. The show will air on Tuesday – Fridays (4-7pm) from Tuesday 9thJanuary. Huw will continue to present his weekly BBC shows on Radio Wales every Monday (7-10pm) and his Welsh language show on Radio Cymru every Thursday (7-9pm).

Speaking about the new 6 Music show, Chair of Cardiff Music Board and Leader of Cardiff Council, Cllr Huw Thomas, said: “Huw has been supporting new music, and particularly new Welsh music, for nearly 25 years now so having him as one 6 Music’s main new music champions will be a real boost to Cardiff’s grassroots venues and artists.

“There’s a real strength, and a lot of interest in Cardiff’s music scene right now and we’re delighted to be able to support this celebration of Huw’s first week and the local talent we have here in Cardiff, as part of our ongoing music strategy to put music where it belongs, at the heart of the city.”

Huw Stephens said: “I’m so excited to be broadcasting my new 6 Music show live from Cardiff every day, Tuesday to Friday. Wales has a brilliant music scene going on so being based here means I can introduce even more brilliant Welsh artists to a wider audience, plus continue to shine a light on the best new artists from across the UK and beyond. Thank you to the iconic Clwb Ifor Bach for putting on this special gig – there’s such a buzz about CVC right now, this might be the last chance to see them in a grassroots venue for a while, plus there are some really exciting new artists lined in support as well.”
