Future of Big Splash 2026 in doubt after funding bid rejected

Uncertainty surrounds the future of one of Wales’ biggest free outdoor festivals after a key funding bid for 2026 was unsuccessful.

Newport Live has confirmed that its application to Arts Council of Wales for support towards the 2026 Big Splash festival was not approved, following what it described as a highly competitive process.

The popular event, held at The Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre, has become a major fixture in Newport’s cultural calendar, attracting more than 20,000 visitors each year.

While the setback has cast doubt over next year’s festival, organisers have stressed that the decision only affects the 2026 event and does not signal the end of Big Splash.

Newport Live said it remains committed to the long-term future of the festival and will continue to explore future funding opportunities.

The organisation also acknowledged the importance of the event to the local community, confirming that alternative funding options and delivery models are now being considered.

Despite the uncertainty, efforts are ongoing behind the scenes to try and make a version of Big Splash 2026 happen.

Further updates are expected in due course as discussions continue.
