The Royal Welsh Agricultural Society is delighted to announce that the 2022 winner of the Grand National, Sam Waley-Cohen will judge the Supreme Horse Championship at this year’s Royal Welsh Show.

Now in its 102nd year, the Royal Welsh Show attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to the heart of Mid-Wales to come together and celebrate the very best of Welsh and British agriculture. Equine competitions form a huge part of the event, with exhibitors traveling across the globe to compete in the Royal Welsh judging rings.

The Supreme Championship is gifted to the best horse exhibit at the Show. This prestigious award is desired by many in the equine community, so who better to judge this class other than 2022’s Grand National winner, Sam Waley-Cohen?

Sam was the first amateur jockey to win the Grand National in 32 years. With only a 50-1 chance of winning, he beat the odds and won the race. He announced his retirement a week prior to this race. Sam is no stranger to the Grand National course, having ridden 41 races on the course and winning 7. He was also placed second in the 2011 Grand National, and in the same year was nominated for the Spears Young Entrepreneur award.

The Supreme Horse Championship is the pinnacle of Show Week at the Royal Welsh, where the Champions and Reserve Champions from In Hand, Ridden and Driven Classes go head-to-head in this final competition. Sam Waley-Cohen will decide our Champion of Champions at this year’s Royal Welsh Show.

The Grand National winner is looking forward to his visit to Wales; “It is a great privilege to be a part of the Royal Welsh Show, especially to be judging such an important competition as the Supreme Horse Championship. I am excited to come along to the Show and to see so many amazing horses in the ring.” said Sam.
