Rhug Estate is delighted to have won two Great Taste Awards for its organic Welsh lamb chops and organic Aberdeen Angus beef rump steak.

The Great Taste Awards, organised by the Guild of Fine Food, is the acknowledged benchmark for fine food and drink. It has been described as the ‘Oscars’ of the food world. The unmistakable black and gold Great Taste logo is the sign you can trust when buying local food and drink It is a stamp of excellence that is recognised by retailers and consumers alike.

Established in 1994, Great Taste is the world’s largest, longest standing and most respected food accreditation scheme for artisan and speciality food producers. 14,205 different products were entered in 2022 from 110 countries. 4,078 were awarded a Great Taste 1-star – ‘food and drink that delivers fantastic flavour’. 1,237 were awarded a Great Taste 2-star – ‘above and beyond delicious’, and 241 were awarded a Great Taste 3-star – ‘extraordinarily tasty food and drink.’ Only 5,556 products – that’s 39.1% of the total products entered this year – received either a Great Taste 1, 2 or 3-star award, and of the 2,344 winning companies, 27% are based outside of the UK.

Lord Newborough, Owner of Rhug Estate, said, “I am pleased we have once again achieved Great Taste Awards. These Awards are recognition of all the hard work and dedication of the entire team both on the farm and in our cutting plant. We pride ourselves on producing the best quality organic meat for our customers, whether they be in our Farm Shop, online or wholesale. The team is always striving to do better and that is how it should be.”

When it came to Rhug’s organic Welsh lamb chop the judges awarded two stars. They said, “These are good sized chops, with a balance of fat and meat, neither dominating. The fat is full of flavour and caramelises well, and the meat is very tender and also full of flavour. It positively takes you to the pasture where the animal lived.”

The judges awarded Rhug’s organic Aberdeen Angus rump steak with a one star and described it as: “This steak cuts beautifully and has a seductive beefy aroma.”

Customers can purchase all of Rhug’s award-winning meat from the butcher’s counter in the Farm Shop, near Corwen.
