Residents will be able to find out more about initial plans for a new walking and cycling route in Treherbert, by taking part in a public consultation next week (June 17 to July 1).
This scheme represents one phase of a larger active travel route, which is being developed for Treherbert and Treorchy.
The Council has secured important funding to develop the new route within Welsh Government’s Active Travel Fund for 2025/26. Phase One is currently being progressed through its initial design phase, and it is proposed to be located between Treherbert Railway Station and Penyrenglyn Primary School.
Residents are invited to find out more and have their say on Phase One proposals from Tuesday, June 17, to Tuesday, July 1. A dedicated webpage will be available on the RCT Consultations webpage from June 17.
The proposed route for Phase One would follow parallel to the existing railway line, providing a new link for the community to Penyrenglyn Primary School. The investment will aim to enhance connectivity locally, including to and from the railway station – through a new off-road link that is safe and attractive.
The consultation page will contain a series of documents and supporting material outlining the Phase One proposals – including drawings of the new route. As part of the consultation, there will also be a public exhibition event at The Old Library on Bute Street, Treherbert (1pm-7pm, Tuesday, June 17).
Everyone is welcome to attend this event, to view the consultation material in person and ask questions to the project team. No prior booking is needed, and residents can ‘drop-in’ to the venue at any time from 1pm to 7pm.
All feedback received during the consultation will be considered as officers shape the design of Phase One. The completion of detailed design work for the new walking and cycling route through Treherbert is planned to be delivered by spring 2026.
Phases Two and Three of the Treherbert to Treorchy Active Travel Route are in development and could be consulted upon in 2025/26, subject to funding.
Councillor Andrew Morgan OBE, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Investment, said: “We continue to welcome funding support from Welsh Government to deliver new active travel routes in our communities. Investing in this area is a joint priority, to encourage more people to walk and cycle more of their everyday journeys – which improves health and well-being, reduces the number of cars on our roads, relieves traffic congestion, and protects the environment around us.
“Our allocation of more than £6 million from the 2025/26 Active Travel Fund is earmarked to develop two new named routes – between Talbot Green and Llanharan, and Treherbert and Treorchy. It also provided full funding to deliver Phase Five of the Rhondda Fach Active Travel Route between Ferndale and Tylorstown – the final main section of this significant 10km route for cyclists and walkers. Construction work for Phase Five is due to start in the coming weeks, while the Phase Four route across Ferndale is nearing completion.
“The Council will soon be consulting residents on one of the new schemes, with the first element being constructed through Treherbert. Further phases of work will then extend the route, linking to Treorchy, subject to funding. I’d urge interested residents to find out more and have their say between June 17 and July 1, to help the project team refine the plans. Everyone is welcome to attend the local event being held as part of this consultation, at the Old Library on Bute Street, from 1pm to 7pm on June 17.”
