The HLM Cardiff studio has been appointed to design the new extension for Techniquest, Wales’ popular science discovery centre in Cardiff Bay, which focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

As part of a project, known as The Science Capital, the new extension will result in the size of the building almost doubling, forming a key part of Techniquest’s repositioning exercise to extend and diversify its audiences to ensure a sustainable long-term future in Wales.
The extension will sensitively connect into the existing building, transforming the current facility into a contemporary STEM hub, along with the provision of additional exhibition space to house new innovative content that will be developed with Welsh STEM innovators, academics and communities.
With a unique approach that includes drawing together the most skilled team from across its UK network, HLM has been responsible for designing inspirational educational buildings throughout Wales and the UK, including the new extension and refurbishment that has transformed Llantwit Major School, and creating the Learning and Teaching Hub for Glasgow University.

This extension creates a perfect opportunity to look at the operation of Techniquest in a holistic way whilst making sure that every pound spent on this expansion project goes as far as possible.”
HLM has appointed Hydrock as local engineers and Wardell Armstrong as planning consultant.
