A new photography exhibition is set to open in Barry later this month, marking a homecoming for an internationally recognised artist.
“Otrovert”, the first UK solo exhibition by Lloyd Pursall, will launch at Art Central Gallery on 20 April 2026.
The exhibition takes its name from the term “otrovert”, derived from the Spanish word “otro” meaning “other” and the Latin “vert”, meaning “to turn”. It describes people who sit somewhere between introvert and extrovert, a space the photographer says he feels most comfortable exploring through his work.
Originally from Barry, Lloyd began his photography journey at Cardiff and Vale College before going on to study for a BA at London College of Fashion. He later moved to Los Angeles in his early twenties, where he built a successful career in fashion photography and celebrity portraiture.
The exhibition brings together a mix of his professional and personal work. Alongside portraits of well-known figures, visitors will also see landscapes and images of people from Barry, many of whom Lloyd has known throughout his life.
For Lloyd, photographing them with the same editorial sensibility he brings to magazine covers felt essential, and says “they deserve nothing less.”
A dedicated space within the exhibition has been given to Level 2 students from Cardiff and Vale College. Mentoring the students and inviting them to respond to the theme Otrovert was an important part of the project for Lloyd.
The college is where his journey began, providing the inspiration he once needed.
“It felt like closing a loop in the most meaningful way,” he said.
“Returning home has reminded me how deeply Barry Town has shaped me.”
“Otrovert” will run from 20 April 2026 to 4 July 2026.
Opening hours are 9:30am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday, and 9:30am to 4:00pm on Saturdays. The gallery is closed on Sundays.
