Swansea has launched its intention to become Wales’ first Human Rights City.
First Minister Mark Drakeford joined Swansea Council leaders and senior representatives from other key organisations and businesses at the Guildhall today where they committed to working together with people across the city to secure official recognition.
Mr Drakeford said: “It’s a great pleasure to be in Swansea today marking the start of the city’s journey to be a Human Rights City, a city that recognises the fundamental importance of human rights to each and every citizen here in Swansea and across Wales.
“Congratulations to everyone who is now part of a great global movement taking root here in Wales and here in the great city of Swansea.”
Swansea Council leader Rob Stewart urged people across Swansea to become involved.

Cllr Stewart added: “I’m immensely proud that Swansea Council and our partners have set ourselves this challenge and I look forward to working with people across Swansea as we begin this year of action to achieve it.
“We want Swansea to be a city where everyone is equal, where everyone understands they have human rights and responsibilities, what they are, and where we all respect the rights of others.
“Putting Human Rights at the heart of everything we do we will further improve local services and decision making.
“Everyone will have a voice, especially those who are currently marginalised or socially vulnerable, and will have the opportunity to shape the vital services that they rely on day to day.”
The organisations attending Friday’s event included South Wales Police, Swansea Bay University Health Board, the Mid & West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, Swansea University, Swansea Council for Voluntary Service, Natural Resources Wales and HR Prison and Probation Service.
