Leeds United’s Success Only Good for Wales

Set to embark on life back in the Premier League, Leeds United’s Welsh contingent are ready to take on the elite teams in English football once again.

With five Wales internationals in the Whites’ squad, Wales boss Craig Bellamy will be keeping a close eye on proceedings at Elland Road over the coming months, in the hope their Premier League endeavours lead to strong performances for the Dragons.

Wales Stars Key to Championship Glory

Winning the Championship title on the last day of the 2024/25 regular season, Leeds United delivered when it mattered to lift the trophy. Daniel Farke’s side, who are huge outsiders at 500/1 in the Premier League 2025/26 winner odds, had tasted play-off final heartbreak the season before at the hands of Southampton. Determined not to go through the stress of a play-off push again last term, Leeds kept their composure at the business end of the season to seal not only promotion but the title in style, and for those interested in placing football online bets, head into the season priced at 12/1 to finish in the top half of the table.

At the heart of Leeds’ success has been a group of Wales internationals that have shone under Farke, with the German’s possession-based style of football. The Peacocks dominated most teams in the Championship last term, and it showed in their stats. Losing just four of their 46 games during the league campaign, Leeds topped the goalscoring charts with 95, while only conceding 30. While Farke and his squad will know a big challenge awaits them in the Premier League, the Whites can take plenty of positives from last season, in a campaign in which Welsh players played a key role.

Former Swansea Stars Shining in West Yorkshire

Two of the Wales internationals at Elland Road are two of the first names on the team sheet, in the form of centre-back Joe Rodon and winger Daniel James. Rodon started at Leeds as a loan signing from Tottenham Hotspur for the 2023/24 campaign, and he was an immediate hit among the Elland Road faithful. A blood-and-guts player who is willing to put his body on the line, Leeds fans took to the former Swansea City defender. While a quality defender, Rodon is also one of the big leaders in the group and is not afraid to bark out orders on the field.

In contrast to the vocal centre-back Rodon, James is a much quieter presence on the right wing for the Whites. What James might lack in physical presence and noise, he makes up for in blistering speed. A lightning-quick presence on the right flank, the former Manchester United man has been terrorising defenders in the Championship for the last two seasons. While the quality of defenders will go up in the Premier League, there is no real substitute for raw pace, and James looks set to play a key role if Leeds are to retain their top-flight status beyond this term.

It’s exciting times at Elland Road, with the club quietly optimistic they can compete in the top tier of English football once again. If Leeds are a Premier League side going into the 2026/27 season, undoubtedly a few Welshmen will have had a key part to play.
