A new campaign is asking beauticians, hairdressers and barbers to help raise awareness about domestic abuse.
People in the hair and beauty industry often have good relationships and intimate conversations with their clients and can be well placed to point them in the direction of support should they need it.
Neath Port Talbot and Swansea Council are working with Welsh Woman’s Aid on the new ‘Heads Up’ campaign.
As well as providing information and promotional material to businesses in the region, two free training sessions aimed at those in the industry are also being held on March 22 and 30.
NPT Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Community Safety & Public Protection Leanne Jones said: “The Heads Up initiative is targeting an industry where there may be regular opportunities to offer support to clients who are experiencing domestic abuse.
“Conversations with a hair or beauty practitioner often cover a wide range of issues and it is vital that staff are empowered with the knowledge to offer the right kind of information to clients.
“The free awareness sessions from Welsh Women’s Aid are a fantastic opportunity for practitioners to build their confidence in understanding the complex nature of domestic abuse and the best way to support their clients. The resources given out to all salons will also be vital”
Swansea Council’ Cabinet Member for Supporting Communities, Louise Gibbard, said: “Support is available for anyone who is experiencing or at risk of domestic abuse and the council, along with our partners, are always looking to see how we can get that message out there.
“Beauticians, hairdressers and barbers are often have quite intimate conversations with clients while they are working and build up good relationships.
“This makes them a good group to target for awareness and how to signpost people for help.
“This month we will be delivering materials to businesses in this sector and I’d also urge those interested to sign-up to one of the free training sessions where they will be able to learn a lot more.”
