Many of South Wales’s cycling groups, including the renowned Maindy Flyers, are celebrating this week as they return to using Cardiff’s only outdoor cycle track and the home of 2018 Tour De France winner, Geraint Thomas.
The re-opening of the outdoor facility follows the Welsh Government’s latest relaxation of lockdown rules enabling outdoor leisure spaces to welcome back users.
Anthony Hayes, Maindy Centre Manager for Better Cardiff, said:
“The cycling track is available for group bookings by cycling clubs and this can only be done by contacting us via better.org. We have created a one way system to access and exit the track and have guidelines in place to conform to Welsh Government’s social distancing rules.
” It is great to welcome our cyclists back after such a long absence. We are getting bookings from across the region, many of them new to the arena and unable to practice their cycling skills elsewhere.”
It is hoped that the rest of Better Maindy Centre, which includes a recently refurbished gym with state of the art Technogym equipment and the popular community Pool, will re-open next month following the Welsh Government’s review, due at the end of this week.
Rhys Jones, Manager for Better Cardiff, said:
“We have been calling on the Welsh Government to move quickly to confirm a date when indoor gyms and swimming pools can re-open. If pubs and restaurants can re-open in Wales, it defies logic that indoor sports and leisure facilities remain closed – particularly public facilities designed to serve local communities.
“Any delay by The Welsh Government will impact negatively on the public health of its citizens, some of which are the most unhealthy in the UK, and also threaten local jobs and communities in Wales.”
