Hundreds of athletes and spectators are expected to descend on Swansea city centre today as the Swansea Triathlon returns to the city’s waterfront.

The event, organised by Activity Wales, is regarded as one of the UK’s premier city-centre triathlons and will see competitors take on a 750m swim, 20km bike ride and 5km run through the heart of Swansea.

Motorists are being warned to plan ahead, with a number of temporary road closures and traffic restrictions in place between 12pm and 4pm on Sunday, May 24.

The main closure will affect the A4067 Oystermouth Road between Wind Street and Sketty Lane, with diversions in place for through traffic and those travelling into the city centre.

Access to and from the Maritime Quarter will still be maintained via a crossing point on West Way at its junction with the Civic Centre.

Organisers say hundreds of participants will be taking part in the race, while thousands of visitors are expected to line the route and cheer competitors on throughout the afternoon.

Roads affected by the temporary closures include:

    • East Burrows Road
    • Somerset Place
    • Cambrian Place
    • Burrows Place
    • Victoria Road
    • Oystermouth Road
    • Mumbles Road between Oystermouth Road and Sketty Lane
    • Dunvant Place
    • West Way

Temporary bus lane suspensions will also be in force on sections of Oystermouth Road and West Way during the event.

In addition, temporary no waiting restrictions will apply on both sides of several roads including East Burrows Road, Somerset Place, Cambrian Place and Burrows Place.

Alternative diversion routes will be clearly signposted throughout the city.

The Swansea Triathlon has become a major fixture in the city’s events calendar, attracting athletes from across the UK while showcasing Swansea Bay’s waterfront and city-centre atmosphere.

Full details on the road closures and traffic arrangements can be found on the Swansea Bay visitor website.
