A man who punched a police officer unconscious has been jailed.

Gary Wyn Morgan, of Love Lane, Bangor, appeared at Caernarfon Crown Court on Monday February 3rd, where he admitted to assaulting three emergency workers and a further assault.

On Sunday August 18th, the 33-year-old was arguing with another man when he smashed a plate over the man’s head before leaving.

Officers located Morgan on August 22nd near Deiniol Road in Bangor where they attempted to arrest him, but he became aggressive, punching one officer to the face and spitting in the face of another.

Morgan was taken into police custody where he continued his violent behaviour towards officers before punching a custody sergeant to the jaw, causing him to fall to the floor unconscious.

The officer was taken to hospital where he needed stitches to treat his injuries.

Morgan was jailed for two years.

Chief Inspector Stephen Pawson said: “Morgan’s violent behaviour against police officers was simply disgraceful.

“Violence has no place in Gwynedd, and we are all aware that one punch can have devastating and even fatal consequences.

“We will not tolerate any assault against an emergency service worker whilst trying to do their jobs to keep others safe.

“This incident will no doubt have a long-lasting impact, not only on the officers who were assaulted, but on their colleagues as well.

“We will continue to deal robustly with offenders who risk the safety of our community members.”

North Wales Police Federation General Secretary and Treasurer, Lewis Davies, said: “Whilst North Wales Police Federation welcome a custodial sentence handed down to Gary Wyn Morgan, we remain vocal around the need to improve the length of sentences for attacks on officers.

“Morgan has shown a blatant disregard towards our officers who work hard to keep the public safe, the danger of the consequences of so called “one-punch” violence cannot be overstated and whilst our officers have a high level of skills and training we are just as vulnerable to the potentially tragic consequences of such acts of violence.

“We continue to support our colleagues and I also want to give thanks to the investigators who professionally seek justice for their colleagues.”
