Merthyr Tydfil community pharmacies offer walk-in COVID-19 vaccines

Two pharmacies in Merthyr Tydfil are joining with Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board’s vaccination programme in a pilot scheme to offer COVID-19 vaccines.

Anyone over 40 will be able to walk-in to the two pharmacies, without an appointment, and receive their first dose.

The two taking part are Beacons Pharmacy and Keir Hardie pharmacy (full details below).  They will be open for vaccines from tomorrow (Wednesday July 14) in a three-day pilot, so the clinics will run Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.  Walk-ins will be available from 9am until 5:30pm.

Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB’s latest vaccination figures show 89% of eligible adults have come forward and received their first dose, while 72% of the eligible population are now fully vaccinated (received both doses).  However, the Health Board is determined no one will be left behind in this programme, and this pilot scheme with community pharmacy is part of the strategy.

Clare Williams, CTM’s Deputy Director of Strategy and Transformation said: “We are delighted to have Beacons and Keir Hardie pharmacies taking part in the walk-ins.

“This is all part of the package to try and increase the vaccine uptake in Merthyr Tydfil.  It adds to our pop-up clinics in the Gurnos and Gellideg last weekend, and that our community vaccination centre in Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre is always available for walk-ins for first doses.

“It’s so important to us that we try and make it as easy as possible for our communities to take up the offer of the vaccine, and we will continue to explore as many ways to do this as possible.”

Mark Griffiths, Director of the two pharmacies said:  “So many people in Merthyr Tydfil have come forward for their vaccine, and that is brilliant that so many want to protect themselves, protect their families and those that they love.

“But we know there are still some people who haven’t and it may be that they decided not to when they were first offered it but have now changed their mind.  If that is the case, I hope our pharmacies will offer them a fuss free environment to come and get their vaccine.

“If they are over 40, they can just pop in to the nearest of the two pharmacies and get their first dose.  They can be in and out in no time and get on with their day.”

The two pharmacies taking part are:

    • Beacon Pharmacy, Unit 5 Beacon Place, Merthyr Tydfil CF47 8DE

    Telephone: 01685 388838

    • Keir Hardie Pharmacy, Keir Hardie Health Park, Aberdare Rd, Merthyr Tydfil CF48 1BZ

    Telephone 01685 370074

Both will be open for walk-ins Wednesday 14 July, Thursday 15 July and Friday 16 July from 9am-5:30pm.
