Wales is set for a spell of very unsettled weather tonight and through Tuesday as the Met Office issues a yellow warning for heavy rain and strong winds.
The warning is in place from 18:00 on Monday 8 December until 18:00 on Tuesday 9 December, with the risk of flooding, travel disruption and power cuts across parts of the country.
Rain will move in this evening and quickly turn persistent and heavy through the night. Although it may ease at times during the day on Tuesday, further bursts of heavy rain are expected. Totals of 20 to 40 millimetres are likely for many areas, with as much as 60 to 80 millimetres possible over higher ground in Wales. The most exposed hills could even see close to 100 millimetres. With the ground already saturated, this raises the risk of flooding and disruption to transport.
The rain will be accompanied by strengthening southerly winds, with severe gales expected in places overnight. These conditions may worsen any impacts from the heavy downpours.
What to expect
- A small chance of power cuts and loss of services
- Flooding of homes and businesses is possible
- Fast flowing or deep floodwater could pose a danger to life
- Delays or cancellations to trains and buses
- Difficult driving conditions and possible road closures due to spray and flooding
- Some communities may become cut off by flooded routes
- Further power cuts remain possible
Heavy showers will clear early, leaving a brighter start with some sunny spells. The south of Wales will turn cloudier later with scattered showers. It will stay breezy, though the winds will ease as the day goes on. Temperatures will reach around 13 C which is mild for the time of year.
Tonight
Heavy rain will push north during the evening and it will stay very wet overnight. Flooding and travel issues are possible as conditions worsen. Winds will strengthen with severe gales developing in some areas. It will also become very mild with lows of around 9 C.
Tuesday
A mostly cloudy morning with rain and drizzle, heavy at first over higher ground. Conditions should improve during the afternoon with some brighter spells. Winds will ease but it will remain windy and very mild with temperatures reaching 16 C.
Outlook for Wednesday to Friday
Wednesday is expected to be drier and brighter with sunny periods and the odd shower. Thursday should stay mostly dry with some bright spells. Rain is likely at times on Friday and it will often be windy. Temperatures will stay well above average for early December.
