Michael spices up Cardiff audience with live tour

Internet sensation Michael Spicer brought his highly anticipated live show, The Room Next Tour to Cardiff’s The Gate last weekend.

Hot on the heels of the publication of his first book The Secret Political Adviser: The Unredacted Files of the Man in the Room Next Door, Michael Spicer’s The Room Next Tour provided an entertaining insight into the internet sensation of 2020.

A comedy writer, actor, director and the creator of the viral sketch, The Room Next Door, Michael’s success has skyrocketed since he finally put himself in front of the camera during the Coronavirus lockdown.  After several months posting the videos on social media and earning over 50 million views, Michael made his Room Next Door debut on The Late Late Show with James Corden earlier this year, and also featured on BBC Two’s The Mash Report. The Room Next Door has also resulted in a Radio 4 series which is due for broadcast later this year, the pilot of which won a British Comedy Guide award for Best Radio Sitcom and a TV adaptation which is currently in development with Zeppotron. Michael also has a book The Secret Political Adviser which was published by Canongate in October 2020 and is the recipient of Chortle’s Internet Award.

Bringing the hit sketch to a live show meant for a creative staging, so Michael talked about his life making comedy under the radar, his viral hits of the past and, of course, performed brand new Room Next Door sketches.

As the man from The Room Next Door finally left his room behind and walked out live on stage, other Spicer sketch characters joined him including The Unrehearsed Voiceover Artist Daniel Smeeth.

Swapping between performing characters and just chatting to the audience, Michael really Spicer-d up the comedy genre, giving the audience something completely different to your average stand up. And they definitely enjoyed it, with the full venue erupting into laughter with almost every sentence that came out of Michael’s mouth.

It was great to see Michael’s transition from his little room to the big stage, and I’m sure soon he will be performing on even bigger stages than The Gate’s!
