Monmouthshire County Council awarded Transport Grants

Monmouthshire County Council is pleased to announce that it has been awarded up to £8.4 million in transport funding across the county to deliver its projects.

The funding includes contributions from the Welsh Goverment’s Active Travel Fund, Local Transport Fund, Resilient Roads Fund, Road Safety Capital & Revenue, 20MPH and Safe Routes in Communities.

Through the Welsh Government funding, the Council will be able to continue implementing its transport projects across the county, which aim to enhance access, safety and infrastructure. It is worth noting that this funding is allocated on a project by project basis and cannot be used for the general maintenance of our highways network.

Projects awarded funding include community road safety training, bus infrastructure projects, road resilience projects to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change and funding to support the implementation of 20mph speed limits.

The Active Travel Fund has provided the majority of the funding. Monmouthshire County Council’s Active Travel strategic focus concentrates on purposeful journeys of up to three miles. This means making active travel the first natural choice for local journeys by improving walking and wheeling infrastructure to connect people to key destinations within our communities. Projects are currently being undertaken across the county to further develop the connectivity of our active travel network and support our collective response to the climate and nature emergency.

Monmouthshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Climate Change and the Environment, Cllr Catrin Maby, said: “We welcome the announcement of the grant funding from the Welsh Government. The Transport Grants will allow us as a council to continue our work to make improvements across the county.”
