There’s a great new way for people in the north of Cardiff to save money, improve their health, reduce air pollution and combat climate change. How?
By making use of the impressive new cycle path that makes it easier for people to ride their bikes all the way from the Heath hospital to the city centre without having to mix with traffic.
It’s all thanks to the completion of a major section of Cardiff’s Cycleway 1. Local cycle campaign group Cardiff Cycle City has tested the new route and, whilst there are still some minor improvements that could be made, they have declared the new path a huge success.
A Cardiff Cycle City spokesperson said. “We congratulate the council on completing this important section of what will be a comprehensive network of cycle paths, making it much easier for people to use their cars less in our city. Only by providing safe and convenient cycle routes will we be able to meet climate change targets and improve the quality of our dangerously polluted air.
“We would urge residents who live near the route to try swapping a car journey into the centre for a bike ride on the new path. Cycling into Cardiff is quick – no traffic jams – cheap – no parking fees – healthy, kind to the environment and fun. Even if you don’t own a bike, there are OVO bike hire points close to the route.
“And for those people who have never ridden a bike but would like to learn, both the council and the wonderful Pedal Power charity in Sofia Gardens offer cycle training courses for adults. Cardiff Cycle City can also offer guided rides along the route, email [email protected]”

Cllr Dan De’Ath, Cabinet Member for Transport & Strategic Planning, said: “I am delighted that Cardiff Cycle City has given such a positive review of this new route which is truly transformational. Its completion is a major milestone in our programme to develop a city-wide network of cycleways by 2027. I very much look forward to the formal opening of the route which we are currently making plans for.”
The new route runs from the Heath Hospital, down Allensbank Road, Cathays Terrace, Senghennydd Road, St Andrew’s Place through St Andrew’s Crescent onto Windsor Place in the heart of the city.
