A new project will offer support to people who might be missing out on other schemes that can improve their employability prospects.
The SPF (Shared Prosperity Fund) employment and skills scheme will work with individuals to give them the tools they need to help them into sustainable employment, further learning or a new challenge.
The scheme is open to those who are unemployed. It is also open to people who are in work, if they meet certain criteria.
It is being funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and delivered by Newport City Council.
Councillor Jane Mudd, leader of Newport City Council, said: “We are committed to ensuring every resident has access to support to gain the skills they need to improve their job prospects.
“We are using funding from the UK government’s Shared Prosperity Fund to help people who could be missing out on opportunities to access employability support.
“It is another important strand of the works and skills programme being delivered by the council to our residents.”
Open to Newport residents who are aged 18 plus and
- are unemployed and not eligible for Communities for Work+, Restart or the youth academy
- are employed but with no qualifications higher than QCF (Qualifications and Credit Framework level 2
- require support with learning English (if English is not the first language)

The UK Shared Prosperity Fund is a central pillar of the UK government’s Levelling Up agenda and provides £2.6 billion of funding for local investment by March 2025.
The fund aims to improve pride in place and increase life chances across the UK investing in communities and place, supporting local business, and people and skills.
The council has been awarded more than £30 million from the fund for a wide range of projects across the city.
