Four new apprentices have launched their careers working at the leading edge of the UK advanced manufacturing sector after securing roles with Newbridge-based Axiom Manufacturing Services.

Over the past 14 years, dozens of aspiring engineers and electronics specialists have embarked on successful careers thanks to the multi-award-winning apprenticeship programme developed by Axiom.

The latest cohort are Josh Parfitt (17) from Tir-y-Berth, Ieuan Webber (18) from Ebbw Vale, Willam Hawkin-Smith (19) from Blackwood, and Macey Jayne (21) from Abertillery.

Over the next four years, Josh, Ieuan and William, will rotate through every department within the company, before choosing a specialism. University graduate, Macey Jayne, joins as an apprentice within Axiom’s business development team.

Axiom is one of the UK’s leading providers of CEM services in the high mix/low volume arena, specialising the delivery of bespoke design, assembly, and test solutions for complex printed circuit boards destined for the medical, industrial, aerospace and defence markets.

The apprenticeship scheme is an integral component of Axiom’s commitment to supporting its local communities, while driving innovations that are relied upon by world-leading companies.

While working as part of the wider 300-strong team at its state-of-the-art facility, Axiom apprentices also study at neighbouring college, Coleg y Cymoedd, as they work to gain their industry qualifications.

Commenting on the opportunities offered by the apprentice programme, Ieuan Webber, said: “I’m excited to be part of a company so close to home that offers a practical apprenticeship with great financial support. It’s exactly what I was looking for—hands-on experience using the latest technology. I’m looking forward to exploring all areas of the business and making the most of its impressive training and facilities. As a former Air Cadet who considered a career in the RAF, I’m especially proud to grow within Axiom, where I can support aerospace and defence sectors.”

This year’s apprenticeship intake has joined the company at a time that sees Axiom delivering on a record orderbook that will see it secure double-digital growth in 2024.

Macey Jayne: “Growing up in this area, I always thought I’d need to move away to find opportunities. It wasn’t until I interviewed at Axiom that I discovered an opportunity to start a rewarding career here. Aside from the chance to gain qualifications and experience, it was the supportive team culture that made me want to join the team.”

In addition to creating opportunities to work with industry leading technology, the apprentices will benefit from a tailored development programme, which has been shaped by the experiences and insights of previous Axiom apprentices.

The programme is led by Manufacturing Engineering Manager, Alex Lewis, who first joined the company as an apprentice in 2011. Alex said: “When recruiting apprentices, we seek individuals with passion, a strong desire to learn, and a commitment to excel beyond their apprenticeship toward fulfilling careers with us.

“We have dedicated significant resources to refining a comprehensive training programme that equips apprentices to thrive at the forefront of our industry. Our newest recruits gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge equipment, supported by a team of highly skilled individuals and a strong community of apprentices who encourage each other to succeed. This level of support is essential, as we believe the most effective learning comes from practical, immersive exposure across all aspects of the business.

“Our commitment to nurturing future talent extends to our strong partnerships with institutions like Coleg y Cymoedd, ensuring that their courses align with the evolving skills demands of employers in the electronics sector.”

Commenting on his early experiences with Axiom, Josh Parfitt, said: “I found this engineering opportunity when Axiom apprentices came to college to give a presentation. The package offered is great and after walking around the facility, I am impressed with the technology and investments made here. You quickly find that there’s a lot to learn, so I’m looking forward to understanding more about Axioms operations and machinery.”

William Hawkin-Smith joins Axiom having completed courses in Electrical Engineering. Discovering Axiom’s programme, he decided to explore options with contract electronics manufacturing. Will said: “I’ve been looking for new opportunities to learn and progress my training, and this industry offers the chance to explore something totally new. I’m keen to learn about the company and its processes, in particular, the marketing and business development operations, as Axiom provides the chance to experience so much more than traditional apprenticeships.”
