New school to open in Morriston

Everyone at Ysgol Gymraeg Tan-y-lan said goodbye to the old Victorian buildings at Tan-y-lan Terrace in Morriston before Christmas and will start this term in a brand new school in Clase.

It has been funded by Swansea Council and the Welsh Government under the 21st Century Schools and Colleges Programme.

Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Education Improvement and Skills, Robert Smith, said: “I was fortunate to join some of the pupils on a tour of the new building last term and I have to say the facilities are impressive.

“I wish all the pupils and their families and all the staff the very best as they start life in the new YGG Tan-y-lan and I’m looking forward to visiting again once they have settled in. I’m sure their new surroundings will inspire them in the months and years ahead.

“This is of course part of a much bigger story as Swansea Council and our partners in Welsh Government are investing around £170m in improving schools buildings and infrastructure in Swansea, more than has ever been invested before.

“This is improving primary and secondary schools in all areas of Swansea and giving pupils the very best opportunities to reach their full potential.”

YGG Tan-y-lan’s new home at Hill View Crescent, build by contractors Kier, will allow it to meet the increasing demand for Welsh medium education in Swansea and to expand as numbers grow.

Headteacher Berian Jones said: “Our pupils and our staff are over the moon with the new building and facilities. We are all very excited to start the new term with a bang!

“I would like to thank Swansea Council, the Welsh Government and Kier (the Contractor) for working closely with us and delivering this fantastic new build.

“We will look forward to welcoming them to Ysgol Gymraeg Tan-y-lan in the near future.”
