Newport City Council has confirmed its decision on introducing new 30mph speed limits into a number of streets or parts of streets in the city.
This decision has concluded our 20mph listening exercise, which started last year with a public consultation.

Following that consultation and taking into account revised guidance on applying the new national default speed limit from Welsh government, we identified 16 streets, or parts of streets, which were potentially suitable for an increased speed limit.

This increase is from the national default of 20mph, up to 30mph.

In March of this year, we published a traffic regulation order (TRO) setting out that we were proposing to increase the speed in the 16 streets.

That TRO was subject to a consultation period, during which objections could be raised.

The council considered the objections received, and as a result has determined, in line with the guidance, that the speed limit on the following two streets will remain at the national default of 20mph:

    • Caerphilly Road (part – extend existing 30mph from the property ‘Brambles’ up to Garth Terrace)
    • Usk Road (part – extend existing 30mph to junction with The Hawthorns)

Meanwhile the remaining 14 streets will have their speed limits increased to 30mph. These are:

    • Bassaleg Road (part – Pye Corner up to 130 Bassaleg Road)
    • Bettws Lane (part – from Malpas Road to Newport High School)
    • Duffryn Drive
    • Duffryn Way
    • Frederick Street industrial area (including Broad Street, Kings Parade – part, and Enterprise Way – part)
    • George Street (and George Street Bridge – part)
    • Lighthouse Road (part – between Morgan Way to a point prior to controlled crossing near Duffryn Way)
    • Morgan Way
    • Royal Oak Hill (part – extend existing 30mph to junction with Chepstow Road)
    • Tredegar House Drive
    • Tregwilym Road (part – Western Valley Road to Chartist Drive)
    • Wern Industrial Estate
    • West Nash Road (part – from junction with Nash Road to point near St Mary’s Close)
    • Wharf Road
