Newport City Dogs Home has won gold in two categories at the 2022 RSPCA Cymru PawPrint Awards for their work with stray dogs.

This is the eleventh year that the team has been recognised with gold in the stray dog award category for their hard work looking after the dogs in their care. Plus, this year, they have also been awarded gold in the kennelling category.

A dedicated dog exercise park – the first of its kind in Wales – is due to be opened by Newport City Council

PawPrints is an annual award scheme that recognises good practice from public bodies in relation to animal welfare. There are number of categories including recognition for stray dog provision, animal licensing work, contingency planning and housing policies.  Each category is judged on specific criteria and there are bronze, silver and gold standards in each.

To achieve gold, the team demonstrated the high quality of care given injured and sick stray dogs, as well as ensuring the dogs in their care have a suitable place to live and fed a healthy diet.

Councillor James Clarke, cabinet member for strategic planning, regulation and housing said: “We are very proud of our stray dog and kennel service, our staff work hard to ensure that stray or unwanted dogs are well cared for and provided with the most suitable opportunity for their future care.

“It’s fantastic that the hard work has been recognised in not one, but two categories. Well done to everyone involved!”
