Newport Live are rolling the red carpet for local communities to celebrate the installation of a brand-new cinema projector at The Riverfront by hosting their very own free film screenings.

The upgrade, made possible thanks to funding from the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund, marks an exciting step forward for The Riverfront’s long-running cinema programme. Community groups across the city are encouraged to take part by choosing a film that reflects their mission, celebrates cultural heritage, or simply brings people together for a shared experience.

The new projector was unveiled at a special launch event attended by guests including the Mayor of Newport, Cllr Kate Thomas, Cllr James Clarke, and supporters of The Riverfront Theatre. The evening featured the first community screening, A Bunch of Amateurs, complete with a red-carpet welcome and plenty of popcorn.

Sharon Casey, Head of Theatre, Arts and Culture at Newport Live, said: “This upgrade helps us continue offering affordable, high-quality screenings in the city centre and brings people together through the magic of film. A huge thanks to Newport City Council, Welsh Government, and the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund for making it possible.

Cinema at The Riverfront has endured for over 20 years because it’s affordable, community-focused, and inclusive. We’ve hosted thousands of films, from the Windrush Caribbean Film Festival to locally made productions, and now we’re thrilled to offer 50 free screenings for community groups to enjoy together.”
