Newport Marathon – one week to go!

On Sunday 29 April the inaugural ABP Newport Wales Marathon and 10K will welcome around 10,000 runners to the city with marathoners from as far afield as Canada, Algeria and Japan due to attend.

This major sporting event is set to attract £1.1 million into the local economy, showcase the city’s regenerated city-centre and raise up to £1 million for good causes.

The Marathon, 10K and family mile races are set to kick off from 9am with activity and entertainment focused around the event village near the Riverfront Theatre.

There will be family-friendly entertainment, sports activities and live music. There will also be a come-and-try sports activity area, sponsors and exhibitors, and you can even grab a massage.

Around 30,000 supporters and spectators are expected to line our streets so if you’re not running, why not turn out on the day to enjoy the atmosphere and cheer on the runners? As well as entertainment in the main race village, there will also be six live entertainment points along the route and some great vantage points including the Transporter Bridge.

Friars Walk are also supporting the event and offering their usual excellent choice of eating and leisure options.

To facilitate the race and the safety of participants, it will be necessary to implement road closures along the route. These will begin in the early hours of Sunday 29 April – maps and full details of closures are available online.

Residents and businesses along the route have been written to with full details and a number of information events have also been held.

Those taking part in the races have been advised of parking options and a dedicated pre-book park and ride will be in operation. Friars Walk, Riverfront and Emlyn Street car parks will be closed, but other city centre car parks including Kingsway will be open. Park Square car park will also be opened specifically for this event. Please however note road closures when planning any journeys.

Due the closure of A4042 Kingsway, some bus stands will be affected. Full details are available online and via local operators.

The event will be delivered by Run 4 Wales, the team behind events like the Cardiff Half Marathon and Velothon Wales, and has been made possible by the support of Associated British Ports, Newport City Council and the Welsh Government.
