A programme of work to switch on every other streetlight in Newport overnight started this week.
Currently, all streetlights, other than those in the city centre and at safety critical areas of the highway network, are switched off between the hours of midnight and 6am.
This is changing from this week, following a decision made by Newport City Council’s cabinet back in April.
“We have always been clear that listening to our residents, and understanding what was most important to them, was at the core of setting our bread-and-butter budget plans,” said Councillor Rhian Howells, cabinet member for infrastructure and assets.
“The strength of feeling people had about improved streetlighting, that it would make them feel safer, and their communities feel safer, was clear. And if it is a priority for residents, then it is a priority for us.
“I’m very pleased therefore to announce that this work is getting underway, and I’m looking forward to seeing the difference it will make for all residents on a day-to-day basis.”
The work to change the timing sensors on around 8,800 streetlights across the city started in the southernmost ward in Newport, Tredegar Park and Marshfield.
The programme will then head northwards through the city’s other wards. It is due to run for around seven months, until February 2026.
Once a sensor has been changed on a streetlight, the change will immediately come into effect on that light.
Further updates on the programme will be provided as work progresses.
