Motorists are being advised of a series of road closures in Pontypridd town centre on Sunday evening as two new food and drink kiosks are installed at the town’s riverside plaza.

The temporary closures will be in place from 5pm to 10pm on Sunday, 28 June, to allow the kiosks to be delivered and lifted into position by crane at the public space on the former Marks & Spencer site.

The kiosks have been constructed away from the site and will be transported to Pontypridd before being craned into place.

To facilitate the operation, Taff Street will be closed between Crossbrook Street and High Street, along with several surrounding roads including Penuel Lane, Gas Road, Temperance Place, Market Street, Church Street and Mill Street.

An alternative route for motorists will be available via Crossbrook Street, Gelliwastad Road, Catherine Street, Sardis Road Gyratory and Sardis Road.

Drivers who have already entered the closure area before 5pm will be required to leave via High Street before 6pm, when the crane installation begins. Staff from the council’s contractor will be on site to manage the closures and assist with traffic arrangements.

Emergency service access will be maintained throughout the operation, while pedestrian access will continue. However, access to properties within the closure area will only be possible on foot.

Residents, businesses and visitors may also notice preparatory work taking place ahead of Sunday’s closure, including the temporary removal of several bollards adjacent to the site. The council said these works are expected to cause minimal disruption, with roads and pedestrian routes remaining open.

The two kiosks will not open immediately after being installed. Further work is required to connect utility services and complete internal fit-outs before they can become operational.

The council is also continuing the marketing process to find prospective tenants to run the new food and drink outlets as part of the wider regeneration of the riverside plaza area.
