Poundland to open its biggest-ever store in Wales this weekend

The biggest Poundland store in Wales is opening its doors this weekend.

The impressive store – around 20,000 sq ft – will open at Valegate Retail Park, Copthorne Way, Cardiff CF5 6EH at 8am this Saturday 9 September 2023.

Poundland’s newest location has seen the creation of 24 new jobs for people in and around Cardiff.

Poundhound, the retailer’s mascot, will be there to welcome families at the opening on Saturday.

The huge site was previously occupied by Football Fiesta, an indoor Football Fan Park experience which is now based at the Cardiff City Stadium.

The store will offer the widest range of Pep clothing found in any Poundland store right across the UK as well as changing rooms to make buying an outfit easy.

The store will also have a full range of chilled and frozen food so customers can do more of their weekly shop in-store.  It joins the growing number of Poundland stores – over 450 – to sell chilled and frozen food, from desserts and ice-cream to ready meals and pies and from cooked meats to frozen vegetables.

One of the big advantages of frozen food when household budgets are under pressure is that they enable customers to save money and reduce waste.

The new Cardiff store is what Poundland calls a ‘destination’ store and like all of the new Poundland stores opening this September will carry extended clothing ranges and more kidswear than Poundland has sold before.

The store will offer everyday essentials such as groceries, drinks and snacks that shoppers love, as well as health and beauty, entertainment, stationery and craft ranges.

The new store in Cardiff has been designed for maximum convenience and to allow customers to do more of their shopping in a single trip and has supermarket-style belted checkouts to make shopping easier.

Poundland director of retail, Darren Kay, said: “We are excited to be opening our biggest ever Welsh Poundland and we know from talking to shoppers that they are looking forward to the opening.

“We’re working hard to make sure Cardiff Valegate will be a cracking example of the breadth of what we can offer in a popular location.

“And just like all our stores, it will offer amazing value to customers looking to make their money go further.”

Over the last five years Poundland has been undertaking a range revolution in its stores, adding whole new categories such as clothing, homewares, and chilled and frozen food giving customers an alternative to supermarkets.

Over 500 Poundland stores offer a full clothing range and over 450 extended chilled and/or frozen food.
