Refurbished community basketball and netball courts have reopened for Maesteg residents and Caedu residents as part of a renovation project managed by Bridgend County Borough Council.

As part of a collaborative project with Sport Wales, Wales Netball and Basketball Wales through the Sport Wales Court Collaboration Project, the community courts have undergone a £223K renovation project utilising £167,250 of funding secured via Sport Wales’ Court Collaboration Fund and £55,750 via Bridgend County Borough Council’s Community Asset Transfer (CAT) Fund.

The Court Collaboration Scheme was launched in 2022 as a collaborative project by Sport Wales, Wales Netball, and Basketball Wales. The scheme was established to assist with delivering a shared aim of increasing participation and widening access to sport for Welsh communities.

The reopening ceremony took place on Thursday 25th September, with speeches from John Spanswick, Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council, Jack Sargeant MS and Stephen Kinnock MP and a ribbon cutting ceremony, followed by Basketball Wales and Wales Netball -led activities with school children from St Mary’s & St Patrick’s RC Primary on the court.

“We are thrilled to have worked in partnership with Sport Wales’ Court Collaboration Scheme and are delighted to announce that the Basketball and Netball courts at Caedu Park and Maesteg Welfare Park are now available to the community. It’s brilliant to see that these courts have been given a refurbishment and another boost of investment in the park, having recently opened the neighbouring tennis courts. I am extremely grateful to The Court Collaboration Scheme for seeing this come to fruition alongside us and I have no doubt that these courts will prove to be popular with adults and children alike in the community.”
