Rhiw Syr Dafydd Primary School ran out 50-15 winners against Ysgol Brynaman Primary School in the Junior Group 10-a-side John Rees Cup Final at the Principality Stadium.

Their new title now deems them the ‘best rugby team in Wales’ for their age category.

The team are primarily made of Year 6 pupils with two pupils coming from Year 5. To reach the final, Rhiw Syr Dafydd played at a tournament in Dunvant – winning all four of their matches, scoring 19 tries and not conceding any.

With the help of their three coaches, Mr George (Head Teacher), Mr Yates (Teacher) and Mr Morgan (Parent); the team, who is captained by centre player Sam Morgan, took home the John Rees Memorial Trophy.

Mr Craig George, Head Teacher of Rhiw Syr Dafydd Primary School commented, “I am extremely proud of the whole school community – not just the players who took to the field but also everyone who came along to support the school. To be crowned as Welsh Under 11 School Champions is an incredible achievement and is testament to the hard work of the players and coaches.

“I would like to express my sincere thanks to everyone who has worked with team this year, to the Welsh Rugby Union for organising such an amazing experience and to Ysgol Brynaman for an excellent game in the final. Playing at the Principality Stadium was a dream come true for our players, having the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of some of their heroes. I am sure many of the players are destined for a bright future in rugby.”
