An appeal for information has been launched after three dead cats were found in a rucksack in Troedyrhiw, Merthyr Tydfil.

A heavily pregnant mum and two kittens were found by a school pupil. The sad discovery was made at wasteland just outside Afon Taf High School in Troedyrhiw by a pupil on Thursday 21 September. The Liverpool FC rucksack was found to the right hand side of a nearby bridge.

The council were notified and picked up the bag containing the bodies that afternoon, and took them to a nearby vet.

The cats found inside the bag were a heavily pregnant tabby and white cat, a tabby kitten aged between four and six months, and a black and white kitten aged around three to four months. It is currently unknown how they died.

RSPCA Cymru is appealing for anyone with first hand information to get in touch via 0300 123 8018 and to quote 01157049.

RSPCA deputy inspector Gemma Cooper said: “This is a very sad incident that these cats have been found in this way and our thoughts go out to the pupil who found them. It must have been very distressing.

“The cats had no collars or microchips and the kittens appeared to be from different litters. Unfortunately we don’t have much information to go on at this stage. We’re not sure of the circumstances they died and we don’t know how long they were in the backpack. They didn’t have any obvious injuries and we’ve not been able to find any CCTV.

“If anyone has any first-hand information about this incident please call us on 0300 123 8018. We’re continuing to make enquiries and would appreciate any further help from the public.”
