Wales Running Events and Marathons in 2021

There are plenty of amazing walks, runs and challenges to look forward to getting involved in the next year.

Although it looks like a difficult start to the year, here is a useful list of running events and marathons re-scheduled (currently) for 2021.

The Cardiff 5k and 10k Winter Warmer Run: 7th February

Join this famous 10K run around Bute Park on the 7th February for your chance to once again support the charity Shelter. This is a fantastic challenge to take part in and support a good cause. For more information and to enter click here.

ABP Newport Wales Marathon: 18th April

The Newport Wales marathon will now be held on the 18th April 2021 and boasts one of the flattest marathon courses in Europe. The route also offers iconic Newport landmarks, such as the stunning scenery of the Gwent Levels – with its coastal wildlife and picturesque medieval villages. Join some of the UK’s top athletes alongside runners of all abilities for one of the most popular races in the Welsh running calendar.

Welsh 1000m Peaks Race: 5th June

Now in its 50th year, the Welsh 1000m peaks race is a fell race and a challenge race over dramatic mountain routes.  The long course takes in the five highest mountains in Wales, starting at sea level and finishing on top of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon); the short course also ends on Snowdon.  All courses are demanding, testing strength, endurance and navigational skills.   Why not enter and challenge yourself? Welsh 1000m Peaks Race

Man V Horse Marathon: 12th June

The town of Llanwrtyd Wells will witness this cross country marathon once again when it returns on June the 12th 2021. The 22 mile annual event began in 1980 and has provided a unique challenge to runners since. Compete against riders on horsebacks across a multi-terrain course consisting of boggy marshes, rivers, mud, hills and more, for the chance to win a jackpot of £3500.

Slateman Triathlon: 12-13th June

Listed by the 220 Tri Magazine as one of the best courses in the world, The Slateman offers four unique distances to suit a wide range of runners of all abilities and levels. Starting in Llanberis, the Slateman combines the heart of Snowdonia’s industrial heritage, stunning scenery and epic challenges to create an unparalleled race.

JCP Swansea Marathon: 13th June 

This scenic 13.1 mile half marathon starts outside the iconic Brangwyn Hall before hitting the beautiful vista of Swansea Bay. Enjoy some of the most breathtaking views of any half marathon on the 2017 and 2018 award winning JCP Swansea Marathon. Visit their website to sign up today.

Drover’s Walk: 19th June 

Follows in the footsteps of the old Drovers, who once passed through the Welsh Mountains with their cattle to the market towns of England, for the annual Drover’s Walk. There are both 5 and 8 mile walks to choose from; at £5 and £8 entry cost. Participants can also choose 12 or 20 mile way-marked walks (entry £10) and enjoy locally brewed traditional ale and other refreshments at an old Drover’s Inn, re-opened for the day. The Wales Marathon: 27th June

The Wales Marathon is the only fully closed road marathon in Wales. This has grown to be a popular race among runners, who can choose from either the 13.1 mile half marathon, or the 26.2 mile full distance marathon.

International Snowdon Race: 20th July

To take part in one of Europe’s toughest endurable tests, runners need to have had previous mountain running experience or to have completed a mountain race. If you are up to the challenge, however, this is a fantastic experience. The 10-mile route starts at Padarn Park, Llanberis and takes runners to the summit of Snowden mountain, the highest summit in Wales and England.

Kidney Wales Cardiff 10K & Family 2K: 5th September

Wales’s biggest 10K  closed race returns again on the 5th September. Up to 10,000 runners will have another chance to take on taking on the flat and fast City Centre route, or take part in the family friendly 2K route. Entries are now open at www.cardiff10k.cymru

Sandman Triathlon: 18-19th September

The iconic Sandman Triathlon will take place once again at Newborough Forest in Anglesey, within an exclusive area adjacent to the beautiful Llanddwyn Beach. The triathlon comprises of four distances, the Legend 72.4, Savage, Full and Sprint. You can now enter here

Cardiff Half Marathon: 3rd October

Take part in the biggest half marathon in Wales on the 3rd October 2021 in this iconic, flat and fast race around the capitol’s landmarks, including Cardiff Castle. This is the perfect course for beginners or experienced runners alike. Find out more here

Snowdonia Marathon: 31st October

Ascend 1112m’s to Wales’s highest peak in one of its toughest half marathons or take part in the 10K, marathon or ultra marathon. All routes start and finish in Wales’ outdoor capital, Llanberis.
