Site investigations to inform final embankment repairs in Glyn-coch

An update has been provided on the embankment repairs at Ynysybwl Road in Glyn-coch. The newly-appointed contractor will complete a week of works on site from January 16 to inform the final scheme, scheduled for this spring.

Major embankment stabilisation is required at this location following several unauthorised and illegal excavations of land, which removed the support to the road above. Traffic lights have remained in place on the southbound lane of B4273 Ynysybwl Road, while the footway closest to the embankment has been brought out of use – to ensure the safety of road users and pedestrians.

The scheme has been very complex and has required specialist consultants to investigate the ongoing issue caused by the illegal excavations. To date, initial stabilisation work has taken place, while drainage, ecology, service tracing and topographical surveys are complete.

The Council has awarded the embankment stabilisation contract to Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd to design and build the scheme. One week of ground investigations will take place from Monday, January 16, to inform the contractor’s final scheme design, currently scheduled for spring 2023.

The existing traffic management on Ynysybwl Road will be extended for these investigations, temporarily increasing the length of the lane closure. The traffic signals will be manually-controlled with vehicles held for short periods of time to enable loading/unloading of materials. The works will be scheduled outside of peak hours, between 9.30am and 3pm, to minimise disruption – however some local traffic delays are inevitable. Tree and vegetation clearance for the main phase of work will take place alongside the investigations.

The Council would like to thank residents and road users for their continued patience and cooperation. We understand that this has been a prolonged scheme, the causes of which are outside of the Council’s control. We will communicate details of the main repair scheme once they are confirmed.
