Plenty of greenery will very soon be planted at Swansea’s new coastal park as construction of the attraction edges even closer to completion.
The planting over the next fortnight or so will follow significant recent progress at the 1.1-acre park, which forms part of the £135m Copr Bay phase one district being developed by Swansea Council.
Current on-going work includes the introduction of water features and soft play areas for children.
The coastal park will also feature a selection of new trees, including cherries and pines. They’re among over 70 new trees being introduced as part of the Copr Bay phase one district as a whole.
Located next to Swansea Arena, the park will be ready by the time the arena opens its doors in March.
Bug hotels and free WiFi will also be available at the park, along with solar-powered benches enabling people to charge their smartphones, tablets and laptops.
Other park features include a new restaurant to be run by Swansea-based business The Secret Hospitality Group.
Cllr Rob Stewart, Swansea Council Leader, said: “Extensive planting will take place in the flower beds over the next fortnight or so to give the coastal park a very green look ahead of its completion. This follows on from considerable progress in recent months, with the park now really starting to take shape.
“The first new park in the city centre since Victorian times, this new attraction will give residents, families, city centre workers and visitors to Swansea a high-quality space to relax, meet friends, enjoy the views or get a meal or a drink before an event at Swansea Arena.
“A key part of Swansea’s Copr Bay district, it also contributes to our on-going plan to introduce as much greenery as possible in Swansea city centre. Other examples include our £12m transformation of The Kingsway into a far greener, more pleasant environment, along with our plans to introduce far more greenery in a major Castle Square Gardens improvement project.”
The coastal park, located above a new car park, has been designed in a dune-like shape to celebrate its closeness to Swansea beach. A living wall will feature on the Oystermouth Road side of the new car park to complement new greenery that’s already been introduced there.
Copr Bay phase one is being advised by development managers RivingtonHark, with Buckingham Group Contracting as main contractor.
Also including Swansea Arena, the new bridge over Oystermouth Road, new apartments, more new car parking and other new spaces for leisure and hospitality businesses, Copr Bay phase one will be worth £17.1m a year to Swansea’s economy.
