Families heading to this summer’s Wales Airshow will be able to travel for free by bus and stay for its Afterburn event as the offer is extended until 11pm on July 25.

The council’s popular free bus scheme returns from July 25, offering free travel on all service buses operating within the Swansea Council area on weekends throughout the school summer holidays.

To help people enjoy the Wales Airshow’s new Saturday night Afterburn programme, free bus travel on July 25 will be extended until 11pm. On all other participating days, free travel will continue until the usual 7pm finish.

Travellers thinking about using the free bus service on the airshow Saturday evening are advised to plan ahead because homeward bound services will be busy.

In total there will be 13 days of free bus travel on offer in Swansea for journeys that start and finish in the city.

The Wales Airshow takes place on July 25 and 26 and, for the first time, will feature evening displays on the Saturday, including pyrotechnic aircraft performances, a drone display and fireworks.

Both initiatives are part of the council’s vision to support our communities and local businesses with great attractions for local people that also help boost businesses, tourism and the local economy.

Council Leader Rob Stewart said: “The Wales Airshow is one of the highlights of the summer and we want as many families as possible to enjoy it.

“By extending free bus travel until 11pm on the first Saturday of the summer free bus initiative, people can enjoy the full day and evening programme without worrying about parking, traffic or the cost of getting home.

“The school holidays can be an expensive time, so every saving helps. A family of four can save around £20 on a single journey, leaving more money to spend on enjoying the day.”

Rebecca Fogarty, Cabinet Member for Community Support, said: “Whether you’re heading to the Airshow, the beach, the city centre or visiting family and friends, free bus travel makes it easier and more affordable to get around.

She added: “Those travelling by bus for the airshow are advised to plan ahead and check schedules with bus operators for specific routes, which may be busy at times.”

Now entering its sixth year, the free bus scheme has become one of Swansea’s most popular summer offers. Since launching in 2021, passengers have made well over one million journeys.

As well as helping families cut travel costs, the scheme supports local businesses and visitor attractions by encouraging more people to spend time in Swansea during the busy summer period.

The free travel offer applies to all journeys that start and finish within the Swansea Council area before the scheme closing times on participating days.

    The dates are:

    • July 25 and 26
    • August 1 and 2
    • August 8 and 9
    • August 15 and 16
    • August 22 and 23
    • August 29, 30 and 31
