    Thirty sentenced over Ely riot as Cardiff disorder investigation concludes

    Thirty people have been sentenced for their part in serious disorder which happened in the Ely area of Cardiff on Monday, May 22, 2023.

    The 25 men and five women were sentenced during a two-week hearing at Cardiff Crown Court after being convicted of riot.

    During the disorder several vehicles were set alight, property was damaged, police officers were injured, and residents were scared in their homes.

    An investigation by South Wales Police resulted in 51 people being arrested and the majority charged with the extremely serious offence of riot.

    Last week’s sentencing concludes the criminal investigation into the disorder.

    South Wales Police said they are extremely grateful for the support from the community throughout the investigation.

    Details of the 30 people sentenced are:

    • Ashdon O’Dare, 28, from Ely, sentenced to six years and six months
    • Lee Robinson, 39, from Caerau, sentenced to six years and six months
    • Luke Williams, 32, from Ely, sentenced to six years
    • Michalea Gonzales, 37, from Ely, sentenced to five years and two months
    • Jordan Bratcher, 27, from Ely, sentenced to five years and six months
    • Tyler Stapleton, 26, from Ely, sentenced to four years and four months
    • Harvey James, 20, from Fairwater, sentenced to a 24-month rehabilitation order
    • McKenzie Pring, 21, from Pontcanna, sentenced to four years in a young offender institution
    • Jayden Baston, 21, from Caerau, sentenced to four years six months in a young offender institution
    • Kieron Beccano, 38, from Ely, sentenced to five years six months
    • Jamie Jones, 25, from Llanrumney, sentenced to five years two months
    • Zayne Farrugia, 26, from Caerau, sentenced to six years
    • Jordan Webster, 30, from Ely, sentenced to five years seven months
    • Jayden Westcott, 21, from Ely, sentenced to five years two months
    • Jumana Fouad, 19, from Ely, sentenced to a 24-month community order
    • Lianna Tucker, 20, from Ely, sentenced to a 24-month community order
    • James Chappell, 31, of Barry, sentenced to four years and four months
    • Jasmine Smith, 21, of Heath, sentenced to a 24-month community order
    • Jamie Bateman, 28, of Caerau, sentenced to five years and nine months
    • Liam Williams, 21, of Rumney, sentenced to four years and three months
    • Connor O’Sullivan, 27, from Ely, was sentenced to five years in jail
    • Callum O’Sullivan, 25, from Ely, was sentenced to three years and nine months
    • Lee-Martin McQuade, 30, from Ely, was sentenced to six years and four months in jail
    • Gemma Virgin, 45, from Ely, was sentenced to three years and eight months
    • Malaki McQuade, 19, from Ely, sentenced to six years in a young offender institution
    • Liam Black, 21, from Ely, was sentenced to six years and nine months detention in a young offender institution
    • Matthew Evans, 22, from Ely, sentenced to six years and four months
    • Cameron Carter, 20, from Ely, sentenced to five years and three months
    • Ryan Knight, 21, from Splott, sentenced to five years and four months
    • Kyle Telemaque, 21, from Ely, sentenced to five years in a young offender institution

    In addition to these 30:

    • 10 juvenile defendants who pleaded guilty to riot have already been sentenced
    • Four further adult defendants charged with criminal damage/threats to cause criminal damage – all pleaded guilty and have already been sentenced
    • One adult defendant pleaded guilty to assaulting two emergency workers and was sentenced in November 2025
    • One juvenile was issued with a conditional caution
    • Five others arrested were released no further action

    Police said: ‘Our thoughts continue to be with the families and friends of Harvey Evans and Kyrees Sullivan who lost their lives in a road traffic collision on that evening in May.’
