This is what you can expect to see, eat and drink at Head of Steam in Cardiff

This is what you can expect to see, eat and drink at Head of Steam in Cardiff

Head of Steam in Cardiff officially opens to customers today (Tuesday, 30 October).

Last night we were invited to take a look around the new railway inspired venue that is opening its doors to customers from today. This is what we found…

    The decor

The first thing that you’ll notice is the incredible look and feel of the new decor. Not only will you find the walls tastefully decorated in travel memorabilia, but if you look carefully, you’ll spot a few local pieces that will make any Cardiffian right at home.

In a space that’s great for family and friends alike, the venue aims to create a welcoming atmosphere in relaxed surroundings catering for everyone from the expert beer connoisseurs, to those that just want to enjoy a coffee and great food.

The incredible choice of beers, ciders and craft ales

Where do we begin? There is far too much choice to begin listing all of the types of drinks that are on offer in this place. However, the one thing that immediately struck me was the squareness of the bar – it reminded me of a few of the pubs I visited in Dublin earlier this year. It’s a simple traditional bar set-up that just works..

With so much choice on offer, the friendly bar staff are on hand to guide you.

Great to see some local brewers feature too

Light bites to full on foot longs

The Head of Steam food menu serves up signature dishes like the ‘Full Head of Steam Burger’ which includes two 4oz Road Crew infused Beef & Chilli burgers topped with chilli jam, guacamole and nachos, and ‘The Besler Board’, a combination of three light bites with their recommended beer pairings.

    The Besler Board

For someone that is a big fan of both beer and good food, The Besler Board was a must try for me. The knowledgable bar staff have carefully chosen drinks to match up to each individual dish that you see. For someone that is envious of wine-matching classes (I’m not a fan of wine), this was perfect. Sometimes you can feel a little silly asking which beers go with certain foods, but the staff at Head of Steam made me feel comfortable and guided me to the right choices. No questions were too silly.

    The verdict

I was a bit apprehensive about going here, I didn’t really know what to expect. I had heard good things about this place but with so many bars and food places on offer in Cardiff, I didn’t know how Head of Steam would offer up something different.

What’s hidden behind the doors of this place is an emporium of good food and drink…

I struggle to pin-point a single winning feature, it’s all good, but the combination of food, drink and knowledgeable staff is what makes this place great – a venue in my mind that stands out in Cardiff.

From speaking with the general manager, there is a lot of untapped potential with a venue such as this. They’ll be still finding their feet over the coming weeks, but it will be interesting to see what develops here as they firm up their position in the city.

As they open their doors to customers today, I can’t wait to see how the rest of the Cardiff community responds.
