Understanding the ins and outs of live casino games

Plenty has changed since casinos first started exploring a shift to online play. One of the biggest changes for the online casino landscape has been the introduction of live dealer games.

These offer a fusion between online and elements of a land-based casino experience, with a live dealer and physical game components in use. If you’re interested to find out just how one of these online casino live games works, then keep reading.

    How live casino games work

A lot goes on behind the scenes to make a live casino game work. Multiple high-definition cameras capture various angles of the gameplay, with the footage all live-streamed directly to a player’s device.

Aside from the live stream setup itself, there are a couple of other important unseen bits of tech behind these games. The first of these is the optical character recognition (OCR), which does the heavy lifting of converting the images of the table into readable data.

The OCR is what allows the game software to read the cards, dice or Roulette wheel and seamlessly present that data in the player’s user interface.

Complementing the OCR is a device known as the game control unit (GCU), which is responsible for keeping the broadcast and game running smoothly.

    Some popular live casino games

Classic casino games that feature dealers or croupiers were all quickly adapted into the live format once the technology came together. But it’s not just table games that you’ll find in the live casino section, as gameshows have also proved a popular use for the format.

Common live casino games that you’ll find in reputable online casinos include:

    • Live Blackjack
    • Live Roulette
    • Live Poker
    • Gameshows like Monopoly Live and Deal or No Deal Live

But thanks to improved broadband connectivity and higher-quality streaming, we’re likely to see even more, new live casino games come to the table.

Things to consider with live casino games

Unlike other, purely digital online games, there are some important things to consider when joining a live casino game.

Due to the presence of a live dealer, there’s a high chance that players may join when play is already underway. In those cases, it’s essential to remain patient, as the game will proceed at a steady pace so players should never be left waiting overly long.

On the subject of time, most live casino games will feature set timers that help to keep things moving along consistently. This means that players need to make their wagers or decide on their actions in a timely manner. Try to avoid distractions and respect the time of both the dealer and your fellow players.

Playing on a stable internet connection is essential for a smooth live casino game experience. The live dealer cannot pause proceedings to account for lag, so make sure that your device has a strong, solid connection before joining a game.

Live casino games offer a unique fusion between parts of the online and land-based casino experience. Understanding at least some of the ins and outs ahead of time is important for players who want to give one of these games a go.
