Virtual Nos Galan hailed a success

The turn of the New Year means that the first ever Nos Galan Virtual Race is now officially over, with competitors from Rhondda Cynon Taf and all across the world having completed their 5k challenge over the month of December.

Competitors who have not yet done so are reminded that they have until Friday, January 8, to upload their evidence and qualify for a medal and t-shirt.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, a decision was taken by the Nos Galan Committee in early September to move the annual event to a virtual platform and give competitors the whole month of December to complete the required 5k distance.

The continued limitations on mass gatherings sadly meant that there was no Mystery Runner or the excitement that the event traditionally brings to Mountain Ash on New Year’s Eve, however the virtual edition of the Races not only helped to keep the spirit of Guto Nyth Bran alive, but also attracted a huge demand for places with a record 2,600 places snapped up in just a week!

Councillor Ann Crimmings, Chair of the Nos Galan Committee and Cabinet Member for Environment, Leisure and Heritage Services, said: “The New Year brings the curtain down on another successful Nos Galan, albeit one of a very different nature.

“After an incredibly difficult year for our communities, the Nos Galan Committee were determined to ensure that the Races could go ahead in a safe but enjoyable manner and took the decision to move to a virtual platform for this year.

“The demand for places was unprecedented and the support for the event was overwhelming – highlighting exactly why the Nos Galan Road Races were recently crowned as the best 5k event in the whole of the U.K.

“I’d like to once again thank all of those who took part and our sponsors for continuing to support the event and I am certainly hoping to see a return to the normal format of the Road Races in 2021.”
