VOLUNTEERS are wanted to help make historic Oystermouth Castle a great local visitor attraction again this year.

The council and Friends of Oystermouth Castle are calling for people who’d like to get involved in their local community and have an interest in history, archaeology, education and research to consider such a role.

Those interested can attend an open day at the nearby Ostreme Centre from 11am-1pm this Saturday, February 3.

Experienced Oystermouth Castle volunteers will be there to explain how they support the castle throughout the year, ahead of its opening date in spring.

Benefits of being a volunteer include free access to the castle, regular opportunities to attend social events and the chance to access a wide range of on-going support and training.

Friends of Oystermouth Castle is a registered charity, set up 35 years ago. Members look after the day to day running of the landmark.

Swansea Council cabinet member Robert Francis-Davies said: “Anyone can join as a Friend and volunteer. Becoming a volunteer is good fun. You get the chance to meet visitors from all around the world and the opportunity to learn and explain all about the castle’s fascinating history.”

Marie Hughes, secretary of the Friends, said: “I’m glad that I joined the Friends; when I joined 10 years ago, it gave me the chance to make new acquaintances after many years away from the area.”

To find out more email Erika Kluge, the castle’s development coordinator, or phone her on 07557 481467. Alternatively, call Marie Hughes on 07778 120294.
