A Royal Navy warship bearing the Welsh Dragon has begun operations in the eastern Mediterranean as the UK steps up its military presence in the Middle East.
Defence Secretary John Healey updated MPs in the House of Commons this afternoon, confirming that HMS Dragon has now arrived in the region and will play a key role in ongoing defence efforts.
He told MPs the vessel “tonight begins operation and integration into Cyprus’ defence”, following its departure from Portsmouth on 11 March.
The Type 45 destroyer has been deployed to help defend RAF Akrotiri, which was targeted by an Iranian-made drone earlier this month, highlighting growing tensions in the region.
Healey also confirmed that UK military planners have been deployed to US Central Command, as part of a wider international effort involving 29 other nations. The move follows a commitment made last week “to contribute to appropriate efforts to ensure safe passage” through a key global shipping route.
He added that the UK is determined to “play a leading role in securing the Strait”.
A warship proudly bearing the Welsh Dragon
HMS Dragon, also known as D35, is a Royal Navy Type 45 air defence destroyer. Designed primarily for anti air warfare, the ship is equipped to protect fleets against aircraft and missile threats using highly advanced radar and missile systems.

It is instantly recognisable by the large red Welsh Dragon emblem displayed on its bow, a bold tribute to Wales that sets it apart from other vessels in the fleet.
The ship is affiliated with the city of Wrexham, becoming the first vessel to hold this honour since the Second World War. The affiliation strengthens the bond between the Royal Navy and communities in Wales, with civic links and engagement forming part of its role beyond operations at sea.
Advanced air defence capabilities
As part of the Type 45 class of destroyers, HMS Dragon plays a crucial role in maritime security and advanced air defence, with the class widely regarded as among the most capable air defence platforms in the world.
Alongside its anti air warfare role, the vessel has previously supported maritime security operations and counter narcotics missions during deployments around the globe.
Its latest deployment underlines the strategic importance of RAF Akrotiri and the UK’s continued commitment to protecting its assets and allies in an increasingly volatile security environment.
