RCT Council will begin a flood alleviation scheme at Park Lane in Trecynon, using joint Council and Welsh Government funding to reduce the risk of flooding while also increasing the area’s biodiversity.
The £550,000 scheme, which will get underway in the week commencing Monday, August 10, will replace the existing underground pipe and manhole system with a new surface water channel and flood attenuation pond. This will significantly increase the network’s capacity during periods of heavy rainfall.
Importantly, the scheme will also increase the area’s biodiversity in the long-term, as the basin of the new pond will be utilised as a species-rich grassland.
The Council has appointed Horan Construction Ltd as the contractor with the responsibility of carrying out this scheme – which will last around 12 weeks. Significant traffic disruption is not expected within the area. However, the public right of way next to Cae Pugh playing fields will be closed for the duration of the works to ensure safety. This closure will be clearly signposted.
Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways and Transportation, said: “The Council has welcomed a significant Welsh Government investment which, combined with joint RCTinvest funding, will total more than half-a-million pounds to carry out this important scheme at Park Lane. The works will significantly reduce the risk of flooding for the benefit of local residents, while also contributing to an increase in the area’s biodiversity.
“The Council continues to invest in and pursue external funding for schemes to reduce the risk of flooding to infrastructure, homes and businesses. In June 2020, the Council was allocated more than £3m Welsh Government funding, through its Resilient Roads Grant for 2020/21, for drainage infrastructure schemes at 16 targeted locations in the Rhondda and Cynon valleys. One of the first schemes utilising this new funding has recently got underway on the Porth Relief Road.
“We also remain committed to carrying out infrastructure repairs following this year’s unprecedented weather, which included Storm Dennis. There are more than 12 schemes to repair culverts, river walls and structures either completed or underway, while the Council has recently announced its intention to bring Lido Ponty and the Ynysangharad Park Bridge back into use by spring 2021.
“The upcoming flood alleviation scheme at Park Lane will be completed over the coming months, and the Council will work very closely with its contractor to deliver this important scheme with as minimal disruption as possible.”
