Adra, a leading housing association in north Wales, is about to start building 21 modern flats on the site of an old garage in the centre of Caernarfon.

The project will transform the old site of Garage Lleiod Garage on Llanberis Road, Caernarfon to create a four-storey residential building which will contain 21 social flats for individuals over 55, as well as a community lounge, scooter/bike storage, bin storage, parking spaces and landscaped areas.

The building will contain 7 one-bedroom apartments and 14 two-bedroom apartments.

Read Constructions Holdings Ltd has been appointed as the contractors for the development.

Elliw Owen, Adra’s Senior Development Project Manager, said: “We are looking forward to working with all the partners on this project and to redevelop a disused site in the centre of Caernarfon.

“There is so much demand for affordable homes in Gwynedd and north Wales, which reflects the national picture. We have made a firm commitment in our Corporate Plan to build new homes that local people can be proud of, which are energy efficient, of high quality and affordable in terms of rent and heating costs.”

This development is part of a partnership between Cyngor Gwynedd and Housing Associations as part of Gwynedd’s Affordable Housing Development Programme. The plan was funded by the Welsh Government through Cyngor Gwynedd’s Social Housing Grant.

Councillor Craig ab Iago, Cyngor Gwynedd’s Housing and Property Cabinet Member, said: “With over 4500 people on the waiting list for social housing at the moment in Gwynedd it is very positive news that 21 additional homes are to be built on this site in Caernarfon.

“Also, it’s great to see that disused areas such as the old Lleiod Garage are being re-purposed to be land to build high quality homes, which are really needed, for local people in the town.

“The Council has set a goal to build 700 social housing through Gwynedd over the next few years, and it is a strong relationship with Housing Associations such as Adra that means we can work together to provide long-term homes new and build resilient and strong communities for the people of Gwynedd.”

It is hoped that the homes will be completed by winter 2025.

If you are interested in one of the Social Rent homes register with Cyngor Gwynedd’s Housing Options Team. If you have already registered for a social home in Gwynedd, you do not need to register again.
