The annual Christ College Brecon Invitational Sevens Tournament took place on Sunday, 27 February with twenty of the top teams from across Wales and England taking part.

Storms and rain subsided for a pleasant day which saw Ysgol Glantaf lift the all-important Cup, with Brentwood School securing the Bowl and Cardiff and Vale College picking up the Plate.

In its 32nd year, the tournament was sponsored by Vale Veterinary Centre and hosted by Christ College Brecon on its top-class sports grounds in Powys.

Teams from across the country took part, including Llandovery College, Hartpury College, Clifton College and Millfield School, to be in contention of winning the Cup, Bowl or Plate. Christ College narrowly missed out on the Cup, losing 38-22 to victors Glantaf in the semi-final despite a five-game winning streak beforehand.

Ysgol Glantaf had double the celebrations as pupil Jack Davies also won Player of the Tournament. Gareth Pearson, Headteacher of Christ College Brecon, and Richard Williams of Vale Veterinary Centre presented the prizes and trophies.

John Patterson, Director of Sport at Christ College Brecon, said: “Despite not finishing with the Cup, Christ College showed great skill and determination against some of the best school sides across Wales and England. The annual Invitational Sevens Tournament is always a great day of rugby that really emphasises the talent we’ve got coming through the ranks.

“A special thank you goes to all that supported us on the day; NextGenXV for live streaming the games, Tantrwm for their big screen in the supporter’s area, Gower Cottage Brownies for providing all players with a sweet treat, the British Army engagement team and Coyle Surfacing for sponsoring our kit, along with all of the local businesses who contributed to the match programme.

“The boys are now geared-up for Colstons 7’s this weekend, and we look forward to coming back even stronger next year and once again welcoming some staunch teams to play against.”

Twenty teams took part in the tournament: Christ College Brecon, Colstons School, Ysgol Glantaf, Whitchurch High, Kirkham Grammar School, Dean Close, Malvern College, Llandovery College, Llandaff Cathedral School, Ellesmere College, Hartpury College, King’s Worcester, Millfield, Bloxham, Hereford Cathedral School, Bridgend College, Monmouth, CAVC, Brentwood School and Clifton College.
