As Wales basks in sunshine, with temperatures hotter than Spain, there is no better time to enjoy a holiday in the great outdoors.
Camping season is well and truly upon us and to celebrate, outdoor specialists Blacks have put together a list of 5 of the top UK campsites in the mountains, in collaboration with camping experts Cool Camping. Gwerniago Farm in Snowdonia and Ynysfaen in The Brecon Beacons have made the list, and there’s still plenty of time to secure your spot this summer.

You don’t need to scale the Alps to enjoy majestic mountainscapes, with some stunning mountain campsites such as Gwerniago Farm and Ynysfaen found right here in Wales.”
Five Campsites in the UK Mountains
1. Gwerniago Farm, Snowdonia

Stays at Gwerniago Farm are as magical as the name sounds. Pitch up at this campsite on the edge of Snowdonia National Park for enchanting views of the Dovey Valley and the chance of seeing red kites and ospreys circling overhead. Nearby Cadair Idris, an 893-metre mountain that’s said to be the seat of a giant, is well worth the hike. Kids will love the underground adventure at King Arthur’s Labyrinth (15 mins away) or spending the day by the seaside at Borth. Back on site, as dusk falls the magic continues with pony rides and the crackle of campfires.

2. Caolasnacon, Argyll
Surrounded by mountains on the shores of Loch Leven, it would be hard to find a campsite with better views than Caolasnacon. If you like hiking or climbing, you’ll be spoilt for choice with the Mamores Mountains to the north and Glen Coe to the south. And if your legs get tired, give the arms a work out instead by heading out on the loch in a kayak. Tents and caravans are welcome and the owners have taken care to blend the site in to its stunning surroundings. With otters in the loch and golden eagles nesting nearby, their efforts have been rewarded.

3. Baystone Bank Farm, Lake District

The babbling brook that runs through Baystone Bank Farm is just the gentle wake-up call required for a day’s hiking in the heart of the Lake District. The farm is criss-crossed by footpaths that lead out on to the fells in the region’s south-west including Black and White Combe which dominate the views. Campers, glampers, caravans and motorhomes are all welcome at this tidy site on a working farm which has hardstanding pitches, electric hook-ups and three pre-erected bell tents too. It’s 10 miles from Coniston Water and just five minutes from the beach.

4. Camping at Ynysfaen, Brecon Beacons
A peerless position within the National Park makes Ynysfaen a cracking base for exploring the Brecon Beacons. For tent campers there’s a refreshingly relaxed ‘pitch-where-you-like’ policy and, with a maximum of just 40 people on site at any one time, it never feels crowded. For glampers, there’s a shepherd’s hut, bell tents, and space for VW campers too. Campfires are allowed and, as the area is a designated Dark Skies Reserve, the stargazing is astonishing. Maps and local information on site will help you find the best walks in the Beacons and the Black Mountains during your stay.

5. North Lees Campsite, Peak District

England’s longest gritstone cliff, Stanage Edge, is within walking distance of North Lees Campsite so it’s no surprise that climbers and hikers are drawn here. The site sits nestled in meadows, surrounded by trees and dry-stone walls in the heart of the Peak District National Park. The birds, bees and a little stream flowing through the site complete this picture of rural perfection. There’s space for 60 tents with seven additional camping pods. It has basic but ample facilities for all as well as a track at the back of the site, forever tempting you to The Edge and its awesome views.
